As a child who grew up during the war, I feel this responsibility to tell the story of my generation who offered their lives for a regime that used their loyalty to establish its authority. Almost three decades have passed since the Iran–Iraq War ended, but I still have the same nightmare, like millions of other Iranians who were children at that time. A systematic ideological brainwashing took place in schools and in the media, in which children were promised eternal paradise by giving their lives for God. I witnessed how my childhood friends left me one by one for the army and how their dead bodies were returned home. Maybe I was lucky to be a girl, otherwise I would never have had the possibility to tell their story.
