Samuel Benchetrit

Regissör: Samuel Benchetrit

Samuel Benchetrit, born in 1973 in Champigny-sur-Marne, France, is a film and theatre director, playwright, screenwriter, and actor. In 2003 he made his first feature film, Janis et John, followed by J’ai toujours rêvé d’être un gangster (2008), which won the Best Screenplay award at Sundance in the international category. After J’ai toujours rêvé d’être un gangster (2007), selected for Locarno, Chez Gino (2011) and Un voyage (2014), he adapted his autobiography, Chroniques de l’asphalte (2005), into the film Asphalte which was selected for Cannes in 2015. The same year he published Chien, which he now adapted into a film.

I wrote Chien (Dog) during a di cult time in my life. I was depressed and I wanted to take a break from society, without completely disappearing. This was when I imagined the character of Jacques, who was also going off the rails. He became “invisible” by taking on what is considered the lowest possible form of life: that of a dog. Not much is asked of dogs: they don’t need to be funny or ambitious; they don’t have financial problems. I dreamed of being like that – having that peace of mind, that abandon. I saw the people I loved moving forward, but I was unable to follow. Gradually, they left me behind. Life was passing me by. Like Jacques, I felt like I was no longer part of this world. In the story, my character lowers himself to the point of complete submission, finding a new role in servitude. In real life, I managed to lift myself out of the hole I was falling into: I began writing again; I began working again. I created a project about which I was passionate and enthusiastic – first a book published in 2015, then a screenplay.
