Halina Dyrschka was born in Berlin, Germany and is a director and producer. After studying acting, classical singing and film production she founded the company Ambrosia Film in Berlin. Since then she has produced feature films and documentary films. Her short film [9andahalf’s Goodbye] was shown at over 40 film festivals worldwide and has won several awards. [Beyond the Visible – Hilma af Klint] marks her directorial debut and is the first and only film on the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. At the moment she is preparing her feature fiction film [Message in a Bottle].

When first visiting the exhibition “Hilma af Klint – a pioneer of abstraction”, it made me speechless: exuberant colour compositions in over dimensional paintings that seemed very familiar. Why have they kept from me so long? I almost felt personally insulted when I read that the discovery was “just” made and the paintings have been hidden for decades. Could that be true? Looking more closely I discovered most of the details about Hilma af Klint were not as true as they seemed to be. Who is interested in marginalizing this artist’s accomplishment? And why? This is a film about a woman who has not been a victim of her time but dispite all restrictions made her very own way that led to a unique oeuvre. Being content with her own work and life Hilma af Klint explored the possibilities she had at her time. She knew that she was doing something important not only for herself but for many, many people. This is a film about a truly successful life. Being a part of the female half, living on this planet, and a century after the beginning of the feminist movement, I wonder why I still have to discover those personalities tediously by myself. It should be a naturalness to talk about biographies like this no matter if it is a woman or a man. Hilma af Klint’s work should be known because she was looking to complete the picture of the world and come close to the one question: What are we doing here?
