Aren’t You Happy? Även i musikalinslagen.

Regissör: Susanne Heinrich

Susanne Heinrich, a vicar’s daughter from East Germany, wrote four books between the ages of 19 and 25 (most recently "Amerikanische Gefühle“ (2011). She was nominated for the Ingeborg-Bachmann-Prize as well as receiving fellowships at Villa Aurora L.A. and Casa Baldi Olevano Romano (Villa Massimo). She sings in various bands and has pursued a variety of artistic projects. With her first short film she was accepted into the German Film and Television Academy (dffb). Aren't You Happy? is her first feature film.

Aren’t You Happy? came out of a deep sense of uneasiness with society. I was in my mid-twenties, my writing career and first marriage were both behind me and I was suffering from depression. Why couldn’t I just be happy? I was free and liberated, and had the choice to do anything I wanted, didn’t I? My late politicisation and discovery of critical theory, post-structuralism and anti-capitalist feminism changed my perspective. I started to view individual crises not as a personal failure, but as a social pathology acted out by individuals. This new perspective led me to humour. Our neo-liberal way of life, which often feels without alternative, suddenly appeared to me as one absurd possibility among many, and is therefore changeable. If this film manages to make something productive out of the social alienation, which I am certain many people share, then that makes me feel, well, happy.
