The Raft
Buy ticketsDirector Marcus Lindeen's award-winning and fascinating documentary The Raft depicts the strange social experiment that came to be known as the "sex raft" in the evening newspapers of the time.
In 1973, six women and five men embarked on a raft for a perilous journey across the Atlantic. The initiator was anthropologist Santiago Genovés, who wanted to study human behavior in situations marked by physical and psychological stress with the expedition. The captain on board was the Swede Maria Björnstam. Forty years later, she reunites with some of the other participants, and together they try to remember and figure out what really happened during the three-month-long voyage, which became written about and noted around the world. With unique archival material, personal stories, and a built replica of the original raft, Marcus Lindeen creates a highly layered and captivating film.
