The Exiles
Buy ticketsThe Goya-winning Belén Funes intricately portrays a mother-daughter relationship against a backdrop of raw grief, the Spanish financial crisis, family ties, and exquisite olive oil.
Delia works night shifts driving her Uber in Barcelona to make ends meet after the sudden death of her husband. Now her daughter Anabel is leaving her father's family home in Andalusia to move in with her troubled mother for her studies. In the background, grief looms, along with the threat of eviction and the feeling of not belonging; they are not only "tortugas" from the countryside, but Delia also once left Chile for Spain. Funes’ follow-up to Thief’s Daughter (Ingmar Bergman Competition, GFF 2020) is an intelligent portrayal of crisis on various levels, but also a warmly empathetic film about healing and family. Antonia Zegers (a tougher Suzanne Reuter) brings dark humor to the role of the outspoken Delia. Extra points for the noisy Christmas and olive oil tasting.
