Sisi & I
Buy ticketsThe phenomenal Sandra Hüller shines as an involuntary lady-in-waiting in a magnificent feminist reinterpretation of the myth of the extravagant Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
The only thing missing from last year's acclaimed hit Corsage by Marie Kreutzer was possibly the ace Sandra Hüller. It's fitting then that the German star (known from Toni Erdmann, the Palme d'Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, and notably The Zone of Interest, also screened at GFF) now gets the chance to leave her mark on our contemporary fascination with 'Sisi.' Hüller portrays Countess Irma Sztáray, who has rejected both marriage and convent life but is reluctantly forced to take on the demanding role of the empress's closest confidante in 1894. This leads to a journey to Corfu, Algiers, Bavaria, and England, and over time, Irma and Sisi develop a intertwined dependency. Susanne Wolff, who plays Sisi, also impresses greatly in this playful and rebellious period drama, with a soundtrack featuring both Le Tigre and Portishead.
