Greek director Alexandros Avranas explores a subject that has been debated in Swedish media for over 20 years – the resignation syndrome that has affected refugee children, primarily in Sweden.
Quiet Life is set in Göteborg in 2018. A Russian family has fled their homeland and settled in Sweden. While awaiting the Swedish Migration Agency’s decision on their political asylum application, they do their best to lead a normal life—working, attending Swedish schools, learning the language, and complying with regular inspections by the authorities. However, when their application is denied, the daughters succumb to a state of apathy. The phenomenon of “the apathetic children” has sparked divided opinions and theories in Sweden. Avranas’ personal, starkly stylized, and at times provocative interpretation takes an unflinching look at Swedish bureaucracy and the healthcare system. Among the Swedish cast are Lena Endre, Johannes Kuhnke, and Anna Bjelkerud.
