A dead baker and a sudden disappearance unearth dark secrets from the soil of an idyllic southern French village. Guiraudie returns to his natural terroir with a richly melodramatic, queer thriller about guilt, morels, and murky desires.

Jérémie (Félix Kysyl) returns to his childhood village in Ardèche after the death of his mentor, the village baker. Lodging in the baker’s widow’s (Catherine Frot) guest room while awaiting the funeral, Jérémie quickly finds himself under suspicion from the baker’s son, who questions his true motives. When a mysterious disappearance unsettles the autumn-tinted mushroom forests, the rural tranquility morphs into something closer to a Chabrol-esque thriller—if not for Alain Guiraudie’s (Stranger by the Lake) delightfully eccentric ensemble of lustful priests, bumbling Keystone Cop-style officers, and alluring widows.
