Lola
Buy ticketsGerman sisters’ technological brilliance changes the course of World War II and lets them try their hand at punk in the 1940s, in playful and stylish vintage sci-fi.
The year is 1941 and sisters Thom and Mars create a machine – Lola – that can intercept radio transmissions from the future. In the midst of burning war, they listen to Bowie and Dylan and experience the anger and energy of the punk movement, long before it existed. But when they manage to get news of upcoming Nazi bombings and pass the information on to British intelligence, their focus changes. And life becomes more dangerous. Playing with images, cameras, and formats, Neil Hannon debuts a cleverly constructed film that with humour and sharpness asks questions about what the world would be like without David Bowie but also about the danger of possessing weapons with a power that is hard to control – especially if it falls into the wrong hands.
