L'Immensità
Buy ticketsThe charismatic Penelope Cruz shines as an unconventional mother in Rome of the 1970s in Crialese’s playful drama about growing up and independence, peppered with song and dance.
All is not quite well for the happy family in the new apartment in the growing city. Pappa Felice is notoriously unfaithful. The daughter Adriana wants to be Andrew. The younger brother poops in protest on the floor, and in the Spanish mother Clara grows the feeling of being suffocated and limited. Crialese teases out a vibrant family portrayal where the greatest love occurs between mother and child. And where his own passion for the Italian aesthetics of the 1970s is obvious – Cruz’s wardrobe is truly to die for. She herself is magnetic, whether spraying water on other mothers, romping around on town, crawling under the dinner table instead of discussing at it, or throwing herself into the cult music numbers. Raffaella Carrà’s “Rumore” is this year’s festival song, in all categories.
