Je'vida
Buy ticketsWinter winds howl, and the snow crunches beneath her feet as a Sámi woman returns to her roots in a stunning portrayal of the bygone days of her childhood and the fate of the indigenous people in Finnish Sápmi.
Iida travels to Finnish Lapland with her niece Sanna to clear out the family cottage of her childhood. She is a reserved person of Sámi descent who seems to carry the weight of the world's sorrows – a life of marginalization has left deep scars. Once on the spot, she begins to delve into the well of memories and stubbornly wants to burn everything connected to her past. It was here, by the fish-rich lake with her loving grandfather, that she grew up as Je'vida. Equally painful and beautiful, the first feature film in Skolt Sámi depicts the bygone days of childhood, forced assimilation, and rootlessness. In the snowy wilderness, repressed memories are unlocked when Katja Gauriloff (Kaisa's Enchanted Forest, GFF 2017) returns to the festival with a black and white gem full of richness in detail.
