Meditative and genre-defying exploration of colonialism's past and present as one of Argentine cinema's foremost talents returns with a surprising triptych spanning three different time periods.

Lisandro Alonso made a name for himself early on with serene, observational hybrid films, rarely relying on more than overarching notes for the script. In Jauja (GFF 2015), he had Viggo Mortensen take on the role of a general in Patagonia. The same Mortensen now opens Eureka with a revolver in hand, seeking revenge. We never learn the vengeful one's fate, but the Western scene takes us to Pine Ridge, for a poignant encounter with Alaina during her desolate nightly patrol as one of the reservation's few police officers, and her niece, Sadie. Finally, we are placed in 1970s Brazil, where indigenous gold miners fight for their land and cultural survival, evading the prospectors of colonialism. Eureka is Alonso's masterpiece, an ambitious epic that, utilizing the possibilities of fiction, guides us through time and space.
