Dry Ground Burning
Buy ticketsJust as much reality as terrifying future scenario in a masterpiece that challenges genres and focuses on sisterhood and an illegal oil refinery in Brazilian favela.
Joana Pimenta and Adirley Queirós skillfully weave together documentary and fiction in a politically urgent portrayal of Sol Nascente in Ceila^ndia, just outside of Brasília, where for three years they have followed the sisters Chitara and Léa (the latter is out of jail after an eight-year sentence), the friend Andreia, and several companions, all playing versions of themselves. As “gasolineiras,” their business idea is to steal raw oil from the underground pipelines to manufacture gas that is sold to the local motorcycle gang. The result is an equally broiling as calm observation of contemporary Brazil, where the bold directing duo demonstrate the many possibilities of film art.
