Burial
Buy ticketsThrilling, and terrifyingly timely, as we are taken on a fascinating visual journey deep into a retired nuclear power plant.
The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, located in eastern Lithuania and “twin sister” to Chernobyl, was the largest in the world when it opened in 1983 and served as an energy source for the entire northwestern Soviet Union. Today, work is underway to decommission the reactors, which is expected to be completed in 2038. Feature-film debutant Emilija Škarnulyte, who previously explored similar themes in shorter works and installations, takes us in Burial on a visual, archaeological journey deep into Ignalina’s empty reactors and underground tunnels, out into the environment that lives with the consequences of the planetary threat we have created and on to the places where the radioactive waste is to be hidden away for a final rest.
