Toronto's vibrant hip-hop scene sets the tone for two brothers growing up in Scarborough in the nineties in the most beautiful portrayal of young black men since Moonlight.

The two brothers Francis and Michael grow up with their single mother in a suburb of Toronto. Francis is strong, popular, and the one who often has to put bread on the table when things are tight. Michael has a more sensitive nature and finds it difficult to assert himself in the raw masculine environment. But Francis’s will power also gives rise to trouble as tensions between the police and the black population escalate. Clement Virgo lets the story shift seamlessly through three stages of growing up in his vibrant adaptation of David Chariandy’s acclaimed book “Brother.” With an outstanding visual expression and a delicate portrayal of black masculinity, the parallels to Barry Jenkins’ masterpiece are not hard to see.
