The Testament of Ann Lee
Buy ticketsA sweeping emigration epic about a revolutionary preacher, featuring grand musical numbers, Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried, and the tall ship Götheborg in key roles.
In the mid-18th century, Ann Lee leaves poverty-stricken Manchester with her family and congregation to seek a new life in America. There, the Shaker movement is founded, and she becomes the spiritual leader of the sect-like religious community – an increasingly provocative threat to the men in power. Mona Fastvold (co-writer of Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, now taking the director’s seat with him as co-writer) crafts a fascinating portrait of preacher pioneer Ann Lee, and particularly her way of leading her congregation in ecstatically shaking prayers – transformed in the film into powerfully choreographed musical numbers.
