Perhaps the bravest filmmaker of the year, Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, fled his country before his latest drama, set against the backdrop of the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising, was due to be screened at Cannes.
At the heart of The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a family unraveling amidst the wave of protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022. The father, Iman, has recently been appointed to a high-risk role as an investigative judge in Tehran. Torn between his duty and his conscience, he fears for his family's safety as he faces pressure to sign controversial verdicts. Meanwhile, his two daughters closely follow the turmoil on the city's streets through social media and updates from friends. When Iman's service weapon mysteriously disappears, suspicion falls upon his own family. A harrowing and politically charged drama, the film incorporates authentic mobile footage from a time when the Iranian people's defiance captured the attention – and breath – of the entire world.
