A single father of two loses one of his sons to far-right forces in this top-tier French drama, which rightfully earned Vincent Lindon the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
Pierre raises his two sons with heartfelt care on his own in a small town in France's 'rust belt,' after their mother has passed away. The younger son, Louis, studies hard to apply to university in Paris, while his older brother, Fus, spends his time playing football and engaging in cage fighting. When Fus becomes involved in far-right circles, Pierre, a union activist, gradually loses the ability to reach his son, and the double catastrophe soon becomes inevitable. The Coulin sisters (The Stopover GFF 2017) ask questions about reconciliation and whether one can unconditionally love a wayward child in a painfully, yet warmly, moving social realist masterpiece that precisely exposes the flaws and the zeitgeist of today’s politically polarized France.
