The Inspection
Buy ticketsA homeless gay man enlists in the alpha male Marine Corps to be loved by his homophobic mother, in much talked-about feature film debut.
Ten years ago, Ellis French (a brilliant Jeremy Pope) was kicked out on the street by his mother because he was gay. Eager to be acknowledged, he enters the Marine Corps. There he tries to deal with the fear of a sadistic sergeant, the attraction to a sympathetic superior and his complicated feelings towards his mother (Gabrielle Union). Photographer and filmmaker Elegance Bratton, who bases his screenplay on his own life story, explores belonging, forgiveness and love in the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” era and skillfully weaves together the ultra-masculine military with the Claire Denis-inspired dreaminess. The result is electric.
