The Girl With the Needle
Buy ticketsMagnus von Horn delivers great cinematic art with magnificent cinematography and acting, and a harrowing story set in 1920s Copenhagen.
Following his earlier festival favorites The Here After and Sweat (GFF 2021), Gothenburg-born von Horn's The Girl with the Needle became one of the most talked-about films at the Cannes Film Festival. The story of the abortionist Dagmar Overbye, powerfully portrayed by Trine Dyrholm, and the factory worker Karoline – just as compellingly portrayed by rising star Vic Carmen Sonne (Godland GFF 2023, Holiday GFF 2018) – is undeniably dark, but it is told with a desire to understand human behavior and a belief that hope exists. The film is rich with references to the worlds of fairy tales and cinema, to Dickens, von Trier, and Bergman, topped with a dose of disobedience in the theme of the film.
