The Eternal Daughter
Buy ticketsThe hotel vibrates with The Shining-like vibes as Tilda Swinton plays both mother and daughter in Joanna Hogg’s stylistically sure deep-dive into motherhood and family memories.
Thanks to formalistically exact and partially autobiographical films like Exhibition (GFF 2015), Joanna Hogg has often been noted as one of Great Britain’s most interesting filmmakers. In The Souvenir films, Honor Swinton Byrne plays the young filmmaker Julie (who reminds us of Hogg) while her mother Tilda Swinton plays the filmmaker’s mother. In Hogg’s new film, Tilda Swinton plays both roles herself: both the middle-aged filmmaker Julie who seeks answers to her family’s past and the aging mother Rosalind. Swinton gives us one of her career’s best role interpretations in this austerely gothic ghost story where the eerie mood is combined with wonderful British humor.
