The Baronesses
Buy ticketsFour fabulous Moroccan grandmothers stage Hamlet and wreak havoc in Brussels in a wild and wonderful film that shines a light on those who are rarely seen or heard.
When Fatima discovers that her beloved husband is not at all the man she thought he was, she decides to take her life into her own hands and finally fulfill her long-held theatrical dream. She persuades her more or less skeptical friends to join her, and it doesn’t take long before not only the Molenbeek district but all of Belgium is talking about the unconventional quartet’s dramatic exploits. Nabil Ben Yadir and his mother, Mokhtaria Badaoui, blend poetry and comedy, surrealism and absurdism, politics, humor, and music in this bold and free-spirited film — which posesses the biggest heart of the festival.
