Super Eagles ’96
Buy ticketsAfter his excellent documentary about Michael Jordan and Nike (One Man and His Shoes), director Yemi Bamiro returns to the theme of sports and politics.
When a Dutch coach takes over the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, he sweeps away the prevailing corruption and apathy, and elevates the players from obscurity to Nigeria’s greatest footballing success in the Olympics of 1996. Ironically, this triumph took place during a decade of violent national turmoil (military coups, the hanging of activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa). But, for the people, the pride in their team numbs, at least temporarily, the pain of watching their country fall apart in this unmissable chronicle of the Nigeria’s turbulent past.
