Buy ticketsSpanish teenage girl causes turbulence in a liberal family when she chooses a convent over university in this both funny and moving San Sebastián winner.
Ainara is a gifted and idealistic young girl. She attends a Catholic school, but the shock is still great when she announces that she is leaning toward entering a convent. In the background there is a deceased, devout mother; in the present, a busy businessman father with a new love interest; and a bohemian aunt who believes life should be embraced to the fullest. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa strikes a fine balance between drama and dramedy, while the phenomenal Blanca Soroa, in the lead role, with a face and a dignity like that of a young Madonna, remains calm amid the chaos. As a bonus: A magical scene featuring a choral version of Nick Cave’s “Into My Arms.”
