Andy Warhol’s Sleep (1964) receives a radical reinterpretation as Radu Jude crafts a poignant tribute to the iconic artist.

At Andy Warhol’s gravesite, the foundation bearing his name has installed a camera. In its pixelated broadcast, visitors pose for selfies and leave gifts, unconcerned deer wander by, and caretakers maintain order—all while claiming their fifteen minutes of fame. In what may be the festival’s most clever and unexpectedly moving film, Radu Jude (Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, GFF 2024) closely examines what unfolds before the camera’s lens. The selected scenes form a multi-layered reflection on life and death, and our relationship with celebrity, while Jude continues to push the boundaries of what cinema can be—in the same spirit as Andy Warhol himself.
