Scaled-down and incredibly concentrated debut that drills down into a traumatic crime and the dark corners of the human psyche. Critically acclaimed and awarded at Venice.
Paulus and Indre reunite to independently dig deeper into the brutal murder of his brother and her former boyfriend, Matas. The police investigation is over and a man has been convicted for the crime, but there are still unanswered questions about what actually happened, and Paulus in particular is now set on squeezing out the answers at any price. It turns into a disturbing journey to a small town a few dozen kilometers from Vilnius, and the sites where the events that lead up to Matas’ death took place. Without explicit depictions of violence, but fully-loaded with discomfort, Pilgrims shows how close violence menaces beneath the deceptively slick surface of daily life.
