On Falling
Buy ticketsThe European gig economy is portrayed with great heart and warmth as a new social-realist master emerges to carry forward the mantle after Ken Loach.
Portuguese Aurora works in Scotland, in one of the many warehouses fueling online retail. Surrounded by rows of disposable products, she moves alongside a workforce as interchangeable as the goods they pack. In the break room, she encounters new faces every day, and back at the apartment—shared with other transient individuals from the European labor market—conversations rarely go beyond trivialities. When a sociable Polish man moves in and her phone screen shatters, both her social and financial stability begin to crumble. British-Portuguese debut director Laura Carreira captures the vulnerability of the gig economy with deep empathy, delicately carving out the story of Aurora—a lonely soul desperately seeking deeper human connection in an ephemeral world.
