Wonder and a world filled with colour, everyday magic, and Belgian white chocolate meet three-year-old Amélie as she leaps into childhood in post-war Japan, in a film for the whole family.

With wide-eyed curiosity, boundless imagination, and a healthy dose of defiance, Amélie leaves infancy behind and discovers language, movement, her parents, and a mysterious garden. The third child in a Belgian family living in Japan, she soon forms a deep emotional bond with her nanny, Nishio-San. But in a society still marked by the aftermath of war, their relationship stirs ambivalent feelings. Through exquisite animation, the film celebrates meaningful encounters across cultural boundaries in a tender story about childhood, loss, love, and learning to accept life on its own terms.

Bring the kids!

Bring your children to Göteborg Film Festival. This year, we are making an exception to the usual 15+ age limit that applies to all festival screenings, inviting audiences to three magnificent film experiences to share with younger viewers as well. The titles are Arco, The Secret Garden and Little Amélie, or the Character for Rain. Children need a cinema ticket but do not require a festival pass.
