Danish "dansband" king with family trauma acts as a personal savior in an emotional journey into a magical musical universe where heart always comes with heartache and music is better than therapy.

The "dansband" Kandis has enchanted audiences with countless Danish top hits since they started in 1989. The front man is the charismatic singer Johnny Hansen, a man who has drawn in a particular kind of idol worship. Together with the director Jesper Dalgaard, we travel around Denmark and meet a motley cluster of people who all keep Johnny close to their hearts. They have filled their homes with kitschy Kandis memorabilia and have tattooed their heroes on their arms; one admits to having put flowers by the grave of Johnny’s wife, a place Johnny himself cannot visit. Kandis for Life keeps a tender eye on its main characters, their traumas, loneliness, and sorrow, but above all how the music brings them together, puts words to their unspeakable feelings and lends a shimmer of hope about a brighter future.
