After being transferred from a juvenile detention center to a maximum-security prison, young Mel (Miller) is taken under the wing of two contrasting figures – Mark (Cosmo Jarvis), Australia’s most reviled criminal, and Warren (Pearce), a hardened veteran inmate on the brink of release.

As a fraught, almost fatherly triangle develops, it becomes clear that even the most hardened men are capable of moments of compassion. But in this unforgiving environment, even the slightest lapse in vigilance can have fatal consequences.

Charles Williams, who won the Palme d’Or in Cannes for his short film All These Creatures in 2018, makes a striking feature debut with this intense and brooding thriller, elevated by sharp direction and standout performances – not least from Pearce, who also dazzles in this year’s The Brutalist.
