Heartless
Buy ticketsSun-soaked final summer on a Brazilian beach offers love, violence, and mystique in a physically powerful coming-of-age story with shades of Guadagnino's We Are Who We Are.
It's 1996, and 14-year-old Tamara's last weeks at home in the fishing village on the Alagoas coast in northeastern Brazil, before heading to study in Brasilia. She and her group of friends float around, push boundaries, and embark on a few escapades. On the outskirts, violence lurks, both among parents and less tolerant gangs, who aggressively target those who deviate from the norm. And then there's Heartless, a mysterious slightly older girl who keeps to herself. The name is said to come from a heart surgery that left a scar. When the two get closer, she makes Tamara's (a super cool Maya de Vicq) heart beat faster. Heartless is inspired by director Nara Normandes' own upbringing in the area and feels powerful and refreshing throughout the body.
