Girl
Buy ticketsAdura Onashile’s evocative debut film is a moving and sombre story about mental illness, emancipation and a life-and-death relationship between a daughter and her mother.
After years of meticulous planning and control to keep her daughter Ama and herself safe, Grace is confronted by Ama’s budding desire to define and find herself without the limitations of parental indoctrination and limitation that are inevitable components of parenthood, whether dysfunctional or dysfunctional. While the severely traumatised Grace is struggling to keep the intrusive outside world at bay, Ama grapples with that particular mix of anxiety and indomitable desire for freedom that characterize the tween-years, while becoming aware of her mother’s distorted perception of reality.
