Valeria Golino sparkles in the role of the feminist writer Goliarda Sapienza, in an impressionistic biopic that celebrates Rome, female relationships, and freedom.

The outspoken Goliarda has served time for stealing an acquaintance’s jewels after her masterpiece The Art of Joy was rejected. It is 1980, stiflingly hot, she is penniless and ostracized by Rome’s intellectuals. When her former fellow inmate, the young, wild, and activist Roberta (a mesmerizing Matilda De Angelis), reaches out, Goliarda gives herself over to a community that feels real. Mario Martone captivates with an indescribable, winding film filled with scenes and settings not easily forgotten. The screenplay is based on Sapienza’s book L’università di Rebibbia.
