Indie pioneer Jim Jarmusch explores both awkward and loving family relationships in his star-studded, Golden Lion–winning three-part drama.
In New Jersey, two siblings visit their eccentric and aging father, and in Dublin, a mother dutifully treats her adult daughters to afternoon tea. The empty small talk reaches new heights at both gatherings, so stiff and awkward that it’s hard to believe they once lived under the same roof. And then: Paris. A pair of twins meet after their parents’ death, and the warmth and closeness between them fill the screen. Jarmusch’s unmistakable humor shines through in a series of finely drawn character studies featuring Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Charlotte Rampling, and Vicky Krieps.
