Pride, solidarity, and the fight for Sámi rights are given new life in Ole Giæver’s powerful historical drama about the Alta Conflict.

Decades of oppression and racism have driven many Sámi to adapt to Norwegian culture and when Ester (Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen) starts as a teacher in Alta, she hides her Sámi origins in order to be accepted by her colleagues. Her cousin, Mihkkal, on the other hand, does not hide his Gákti from anyone and through him she comes in contact with the budding protest against the construction of the Alta Dam, a large-scale power-plant project that the Norwegian state has decided on without regard to the river’s importance to the Sámi people. Soon Ester finds herself in a tumultuous turn of events that forces her to take existential positions both in front of herself, her family, and the world around her.
