A woman embarks on a journey after a lost romance in Jia Zhangke’s hybrid masterpiece chronicling a China in transition.

When the pandemic struck and filming opportunities became limited, Jia Zhangke (Ash is Purest White, GFF 2019) turned to his archives to craft the story of Qiaoqiao, a woman who hasn’t given up hope of finding her lost love. By blending documentary footage shot on DV cameras, unused material from several of his films, and new recordings featuring his wife and actress Zhao Tao, the Chinese master continues his exploration of the China he has long been captivated by portraying. Caught by the Tides premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and stands as Zhangke’s ultimate magnum opus—a breathtaking cinematic journey through time and space, and through a transforming China.
