Animal
Buy ticketsMelancholic portrayal of seasonal entertainment workers at an all-inclusive island resort
The dream of becoming the new Madonna led Kalia (Dimitra Vlagopoulou, winner best actor in Locarno) to run away from home at a young age to work as an entertainer in the tourism industry. Now, ten years later, she is stuck in the seasonal work hamster wheel, disillusioned and lacking the capacity to dream. Animal is a subtle but sharp critique of the socio-economic system and its poor working conditions. With warmth and intimacy, a diverse group of individuals toiling in the undergrowth of the holiday paradise is depicted, carrying the most income-generating part of Greece's economy on their shoulders. With beautiful photography that does justice to the ambitious stage shows but at the same time does not shy away from the trashy downside, and an irresistibly smart soundtrack (Alla Pugacheva!), this is a gem that should not be missed.
