Enigmatic lakes and streams become, in harmony with literature, a source of imagination, in a dreamy triptych from present, past, and future.

Two students take the train from Berlin to spend a few days at a lake. Fascinated by the water, its depth, and the mysteries it hides, they read and dream of new worlds in what seem to be other times, where the landscapes seduce and the mystery of the waterways triggers the imagination. Inspired by stories about Brazilian Vila Amaury, a city whose remains today lie at the bottom of an artificial lake, as well as G. Evelyn Hutchinson’s studies of inland waters, Dane Komljen creates (in what is only his second feature film) a sensuous triptych in which nature plays the leading role and the waterways bind the parts together. With an enchanting soundscape and endlessly beautiful photography, Afterwater is a meditative experience to listen to as much as to watch.
