Directors Talk: Mohammad Rasoulof

After being sentenced to eight years in prison and caning, Mohammad Rasoulof was forced to flee Iran just before his The Seed of the Sacred Fig competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2024. Since Rasoulof, known for his confrontational storytelling style, made his debut in 2002, he has been awarded internationally and punished nationally with prison sentences, travel bans and work bans for his uncompromising films. His breakthrough came with Manuscripts Don't Burn (2013), and with There is No Evil (2020) he won the Golden Bear in Berlin. Now he lives in exile, just like the two young actresses who rebel in the film.
