Devashish Makhija

Regissör: Devashish Makhija

Devashish Makhija, born in Calcutta, India, is a director, writer, graphic artist and poet. He studied at Don Bosco High School Land pursued a degree in Economics at St.Xavier’s College. He began his career as an Assistant Director on Indian films, such as Black Friday (2007). His first short films were awarded in India, his third short Absent had official selections in Toronto and New York Indian Film festivals while Oonga, his first feature, was a national success. Ajji is his second feature film.

Nietzsche and Dostoevsky (in ‘The Brothers Karmazov’), both said: if God is dead, everything is permitted. This seems to be at the heart of crime in the modern world. The evil, in a larger sense, almost has no explanation. It proliferates in the Death of God. It spurs even an old woman (one who has a clear moral compass) like Ajji to play God to mete out a justice that feels right to her alone. She becomes – in fact transcends – the criminal law that let her down. She pronounces a sentence simply because in this God-less world she can. In a world where God is Dead there is no larger morality an individual can turn to. Your personal morality is as valid as mine. And so my idea of justice would hold as much value as yours. Where then is that line between Right and Wrong? Is there a line at all? ‘Ajji’ is an exploration of what an individual at the bottom of the social/political food chain in the brutal modern city needs to do to find any semblance of Justice.
