A teenager in 1930s Denmark is forced into a home to cure her rebellious behavior in Malou Reymann’s powerful masterstroke about the country’s dark women’s history.

Copenhagen bubbles with the winds of change as jazz music sweeps through interwar Europe. Maren, the eldest daughter in a poor household, absorbs the new with great enthusiasm, but her youthful defiance and zest for life are not seen kindly by those around her. She is instead classified as antisocial and placed, against her will, at Sprogö – a remote institution for “mentally weak” and “antisocial” women. Malou Reymann (A Perfectly Normal Family, GFF 2020) has done meticulous research into real women’s destinies and with Unruly has created a grand drama, driven by a phenomenal cast that, with an almost vindictive compassion for its unruly female characters, provides redress for a historic betrayal.
