Aronofsky delivers a powerful, heavyweight drama with an Oscar performance by Brendan Fraser as the English teacher seeking reconciliation with his daughter before he dies of obesity.

Charlie lives an isolated life and does his teaching work online. He weighs nearly six hundred pounds and does not leave home, barely even the sofa. The only people who stop by are his friend and nurse Liz, an obstinate missionary, the pizza delivery guy, and finally, his teenage daughter, who wonders why she should forgive her father who abandoned her. Aronofsky creates a claustrophobic and awkward mood in a warm, humane chamber drama (based on a play by Samuel D. Hunter) about relationships, love, and empathy. Fraser literally gives us his life’s greatest performance as the dying man battling with shame, guilt, grief, and deliverance. The comic relief arrives with the somewhat twisted and brilliantly played supporting roles.
