The Rye Horn
Buy ticketsA woman on the run reinvents herself in an earthy Galician sister- and motherhood drama, the critically acclaimed winner of the Golden Shell at San Sebastián.
With the help of María and other women of various ages, a woman gives birth to a child in her bedroom somewhere in the countryside of Galicia in 1971. María later tries to assist a younger woman with an abortion. It is not explicitly stated but becomes abundantly clear that a woman living alone, and engaging in what María does, is very vulnerable in the repressive Franco-era Spain. She is forced to flee, change her identity, and at the same time confront the question of whether she should dare to take on an even greater challenge: becoming a mother herself. Jaione Camborda's distinctive second feature film portrays a woman's inner and outer journey with a sensuous flow in an exceptional way. Winner of the top prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
