Saoirse Ronan excels herself in te role as an alcoholic reluctantly returning home to the Orkney Islands to seek healing in a gripping bestseller adaptation.

When the outgoing party girl Rona finally admits to her alcoholism, she leaves behind the failure of her London life and returns home to the Orkney Islands in an attempt to find a clean path forward. As the situation at her parents' home becomes stifling, she takes a job as a birdwatcher on the most remote little island, where, with the help of the harshness of nature, she is forced to face her demons. Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher GFF 2020) directs Ronan brilliantly – in fragmented form and various formats – moving from partying, misery, vomit, and family conflicts to encounters with nature, strange fantasies and, ultimately, peace. The screenplay is based on Amy Liptrot's memoir The Outrun: Days on Orkney.
