The Book of Joy
Buy ticketsBold and atmospheric debut blends God and organized drug trade as an orphaned young woman with a message of grace and love meets her own broken Jesus.
Orphaned Joy (the magnetic Sonia Bonny) has been raised in the church by Pastor Léonard (wonderful Raphaël Thiéry, The Dreamer, GFF 2024). Now 25, she is the embodiment of goodness, riding her bike through an empty, nocturnal city in her hoodie to help the homeless. When a young man flees to the confessional booth to escape two brutal cops, she sees her chance to make a real difference. She soon experiences not only heavenly, but also carnal love, and joins his twisted criminal gang (led by Mater, a wild Asia Argento) to save and help with God's grace, from the inside. Camille Lugan debuts with a distinctive and strange, stylistic noir that never stops surprising, seducing, and confounding.
