September Says
Buy ticketsSingle mum and troubled teenage sisters in Yorgos Lanthimos' actress wife Ariane Labed's fascinating and well-acted directorial debut.
The English sisters July and September are quirky and very different from each other: July is insecure and introverted, while September is outgoing, brash, and increasingly manipulative. When September is suspended from school and July becomes the target of rumors and ostracism, their mother (Rakhee Thakrar from Sex Education) takes them to a summer house on the Irish coast. Labed's sensitive depiction of puberty, sisterhood, independence, and loss moves from an inventive character study to dreamlike sequences with undertones of horror. Ultimately, it becomes a game with the audience: is it reality, dream, or mental illness?
