Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass
Buy ticketsThe brilliant Quay brothers take on Bruno Schulz once again in this strange animation where Jozef visits his father in a sanatorium beyond time and space.
The Quay brothers' adaptation of Schulz's modernist classic is a completely surreal experience, where memories, dreams and truth are questioned and destabilized. Only when the son Jozef arrives at the sanatorium does Doctor Gotard announce the fathers passing. Not so strange really as the sanatorium is outside all time zones. We exist in a no man's land, everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Possibly asleep, possibly awake. Inspired by stories from Central Europe, the Quay Brothers make yet another ingenious, baroque and macabre animation, where the viewer finds himself in the midst of the batter of a mysterious darkness.
