Orenda
Buy ticketsWith existential questions, stunning cinematography, powerful performances, and magical landscapes from a rugged island, Orenda firmly places itself within the Bergmanesque film tradition.
Pirjo Honkasalo’s background as a cinematographer is evident from the very first frames of the opening credits, where the camera sensuously glides over the rocky shores of the Finnish archipelago. Arriving on the remote island is soprano Nora (Alma Pöysti), who seeks out Natalia (Pirkko Saisio, also the screenwriter), an older female priest who has distanced herself from the church to devote herself to another spiritual practice centered around the concept of Orenda. Nora’s recently deceased husband’s final wish was for Natalia, with whom he lived as a child, to officiate his funeral. The fates of the two women intertwine in a beautiful, emotional drama that explores themes of faith, grief, guilt, and grace.
