Misericordia
Buy ticketsA robust Sicilian, Pasolini-esque maternal drama from the shadowlands of society, portrayed with a poetic and sharp feminist gaze by Göteborg Film Festival favorite Emma Dante.
Following her Ingmar Bergman Competition winner A Street in Palermo in 2014 and The Macaluso Sisters in 2021, Dante is back with her third film, just like the first two, adapted from her own stage play. Three prostitutes live in ramshackle huts on the shores of the Mediterranean, both literally and metaphorically on the fringes of society. Their lives are marked by poverty, ignorance, and violence but brightened by the presence of Arturo, an orphaned, mentally disabled, and vulnerable child in a restless and increasingly adult body, whom they care for with great maternal love. Misericordia is an allegorical, tough-minded feminist, and uncompromising film, portrayed with stark compassion and a Pasolini-like concern for society's discarded souls.
